What is the story of One Piece about?

900 years ago, there existed an extremely prosperous and powerful kingdom known to readers as the Ancient Kingdom (AK) that had two goals, or wills you can say – they wanted to unite all of the different races of the world and ensure absolute freedom worldwide. This was the Will of D.

At the same time, there were 20 Kings who vehemently opposed this goal – they wanted to enslave the Fishmen, the Dwarves, the Giants and the other races, as well as gain control over the entire world.

Skip 100 years, and the AK has been wiped out and the 20 Kings have formed the World Government, themselves becoming World Nobles who let ‘puppets’ rule the world for them whilst they enjoy the luxuries of their special status, including the right to enslave anybody they want and kill whoever they wish.

What happened during these 100 years? Nobody knows and so this period is known as the “Void Century”, though we speculate the worst of the worst happened (including genocide) – the World Government has banned anybody from studying this period of history, which is very easy given that there are no records of the time period, for obvious reasons.

(Hell, an entire island and its inhabitants were all blown to bits by an entire navy just because they had managed to piece the puzzle* together, which brings me to the next part.)

However, before the AK was annihilated, they had predicted their own downfall, thus they created 30 cubic monolithic indestructible stones called “Poneglyphs” (which contained writings explaining in their ancient language what occurred during the Void Century as well as their ideals of freedom and equality) and hid them around the world, hoping that one day someone would be able to read the extinct language, piece the puzzle* together and discover the truth of this world, and overthrow the World Government so that they would be able to carry out the AK’s Will once and for all.

Fast-forward to 20 years ago, a pirate named Gol D. Roger had translated all of the Poneglyphs and uncovered the secrets of the Void Century – however, he had caught an incurable disease and so would die soon, thus he wouldn’t be able to fulfil the Will of the AK (his ancestors) in the time he had left, among other reasons.

Purposefully turning himself in to the Marines, he proclaimed to the execution crowd right before he was executed that there existed a great, legendary treasure of his called “One Piece” located somewhere in the world – with the intention that it would spark millions of people into becoming pirates and with the hope that one of them would find the ruins of the AK (Raftel) and do what he was unable to: use the knowledge of the Void Century to expose the World Government to the oblivious public, overthrow these oppressive rulers and unite the world together regardless of race (as well as unite all of the oceans, but I won’t get into that).
